The story of The Guns and Armour, a chapter of history largely forgotten, was brought to life for me as I spent time with my many fellow underwater enthusiasts, diving the wrecks. As a diver, I found them irresistible. As a photographer, I became intent on creating images that would capture their true essence. The large naval guns, the batteries of smaller guns and the thick armour plate; they were like sunken fortresses. The drama of the German wrecks in Scapa Flow demanded that I shoot in black and white. The scarce light, the muted colors, and the geometry of the subjects; all of this was accentuated in monochrome.
