Some Things Missing

This submission shows page spreads from my recent project, “Some Things Missing”. It is a diary-like, freely associative body of work, which has grown organically in the form of artist’s books and incorporates photography, collage, painting and drawing.

This submission shows page spreads from my recent project, “Some Things Missing”. It is a diary-like, freely associative body of work, which has grown organically in the form of artist’s books.

Among the techniques used are paper-based painting, ink drawing, and collage, all assembled in stapled paper booklets. There is a strong textural aspect, as washes of paint warp the paper, and paint from other pages seeps through. Using my own archival photographs, the project draws from memories but also hints at the unknowable nature of the future, by its absence of words, faces, recognisable places, times or indeed, anything tangible.

The analogue approach, and material distress, produce a dream-like quality and act as a counter to the digital world. The layering and accumulation of different elements create a narrative continuity out of fragments. Working in book form evokes the private and intimate nature of a diary.
