Slight Night Shiver explores the theme of isolation through night photography. Taken mostly late at night/early morning around my current chosen "home”.
As a single woman living in a country that is not my own, I have been enveloped by my own feelings of isolation and what it means to be outside. I have come back to photography after many years away as a home I once knew.
With the Slight Night Shiver series i have begun to explore my neighbourhood late at night, as well as my own feelings of loneliness and isolation. Once I began photography again in earnest, I have had moments of nostalgia, like the feeling you get when the seasons begin to change. A familiarity that is difficult to put your finger on, a longing for both future and past simultaneously.
Women are always told to not be out at night alone, and we must have a sense of caution around our own wellbeing at all times. While Japan is a relatively safe country it is not perfect, and that slight sense of discomfort has stayed with me while working on this project. I wish to catch my viewer slightly off guard with use of soft colour and negative space. I have used quite specific crops and large portions of negative space to evoke tension between the mundane and the unknown. To create comfort in unease.
Through these images, I invite the viewer to reflect on the quiet solace and discomfort of being alone at night- a state both familiar and unsettling.
