Last year, sensing a significant life change as my mom prepared to return to Peru and my daughter headed off to college, I decided to recreate pivotal moments from our lives in front of the homes we had lived in Miami.
Last year, I sensed that I would be leaving Miami for a few months. My life was undergoing a significant transformation. I had spent most of my life in Miami with my mom and daughter, but now my mom was returning to our hometown in Peru, and my daughter was heading off to college.
One sunny afternoon, during my usual neighborhood walk, my mom called. We reminisced about the various houses we had lived in and the memories and challenges we had faced together. Feeling nostalgic, I came up with the idea to recreate pivotal moments from my life in front of those Miami homes.
At the time, I had no idea that this project would become one of the most challenging endeavors I’ve ever undertaken. It unearthed emotions I had long tucked away. The process was cathartic—planning it, discussing it with my girls, capturing the moments, letting the project rest for a year, revisiting it to edit the images, and finally, embroidering them.
This project reminded me that pain can lead to valuable lessons and love can grow into resilience.
