When my mom prepared to return to Peru and my daughter headed off to college, I decided to recreate pivotal moments from our lives in front of the homes we had lived in Miami. At the time, I had no idea this project would be challenging.
The summer of 2023 was a big turning point for me. My mom was moving back to Peru, my girl was heading off to college, and I had plans to travel for a few months. I was feeling super nostalgic about leaving Miami, and during a chat with my mom about all the houses we’d lived in, I got this urge to recreate big moments from our lives in front of those homes.
The planning, prepping, and doing the photo shoots brought up a ton of emotions—it turned out to be one of the hardest projects I’ve ever taken on. I took the photos that summer but couldn’t even look at them until a year later, in the summer of 2024. That’s when I finally edited and embroidered them.
Living in these casitas taught me countless lessons. The process of making these works allowed me to heal and express emotions I hadn’t fully explored yet.
