I hope that by looking at these photographs you feel like you are visiting your own grandparents, and have an opportunity to celebrate them. May you look at these images and relive the moments within the stories shared, whilst discovering the spaces in which they express themselves.

In society today it is often seen that individuals who grow older are cast aside and placed into Care Centers and Old Age Homes.

Instead of excluding them we should be celebrating them.

The initial idea behind this project was to go visit the Old Age Home, "Huis Vergenoegd" located in Paarl, Western Cape, South Africa and photograph my gran and her dearest friends for them to fill the photo frames in their apartments.

Upon my first visit the residents of "Huis Vergenoegd" all aged between 80 and 100 captured my heart with the stories they had to share, their joy, wisdom, humor and creativity. I frequently return and this is a collection of moments & stories collected throughout these visits.

The project is executed through the use of 35mm film in order to make the subjects relate and feel comfortable with the medium, and in doing so creating photographs that are as authentic as possible.

I hope that by looking at these photographs you feel like you are visiting your own grandparents, and have an opportunity to celebrate them. May you look at these images and relive the moments within the stories shared, whilst discovering the spaces in which they express themselves.

"Our daughter was a guest professor for four months at a university in Bochum, close to Bonn. She invited me and my wife for a visit. From Sunday night to Wednesday night she was in Bochum and for the rest of the week she was with us in Bonn where we lived in one of her colleges home next to a beautiful river. On our last evening after a month long holiday we went to a streetcafe in Markplatz to have dinner. Every Thursday night they have a different symphony playing and the people dance all night long to the beat of the music. The music was very sophisticated and for me and my wife who loves dancing, it was very appealing. While we were listening to the music, we couldn’t help but start moving to the music. I was still using a walking stick after I got a hip replacement, but the next moment me and my wife got pushed onto the dance floor. A German lady took my wife’s coat and we spontaneously started moving to the rhythm of the music- slowly, interpreting the music in our own way. When the music ended there was a big ovation, not for the symphony, but for us! There was a cameras snapping everywhere!" - Dawie, 90.

"It is an honour for me to share my sweet memories with you. It is an honour that not everyone gets to experience. This picture was taken when I was between the age of 1 and 2 years old and this was also the first time I got my hair cut. I did not keep my hair to brag about it, but rather because my mom kept it for years and placed so much value on it. One always keeps the things of the person you love forever. I remember all her best attributes in different ways and I strive to leave that legacy to my grandchildren. -Dalleen, 93 "

"I had 5 children, one son and four daughters, over ten years- a big joy with many animals as well. Rabbits, parrots, cats, dogs and horses. Children is an absolute bonus to life, everyone born with their own character. The most beautiful thing is to see how each one lives a successful life. The farm gave us a lot of opportunities. Space and opportunity for challenges, friends and family who you love, but also required a lot of hard work. Another big bonus is the nine grandchildren who I was very much involved with, they also developed a big love for the farm. I had a very big love for traveling when it was still affordable back in the day. It is the joy of my old days to look back at postcards and memories that I collected over the years and know that there is a South Africa in every country. I am very grateful that I get to stay in Huis Vergenoegd in the Paarl, here in South Africa. Building new friendships with visits to the movies, going to church, reaching out to less privileged communities and laughing is all part of the things that we do together as friends. It truly is a beautiful group of people that I can call my friends who care for each other" - Ria Terblanche ( Grandma ), 84
