Coronavirus, like climate change, are problems of our economic structure. Although both appear to be “environmental” or “natural” problems, they are socially driven.
All of Italy’s 60 million people have been under restrictions in an attempt to slow down the spread of the Coronavirus Disease and only allowed to go out to purchase food or medicine. From the threat of infection and social isolation to economic insecurity, SARS-CoV-2 has left many people feeling stressed while adjusting to the limitations of life under lockdown. This is a grave reminder of what we face in Italy and around the globe. The storm will pass, humankind will survive, but we will inhabit a different world. It is a time to turn the page and try to build a better future. Humanity needs to make a choice. Will we travel down the route of disunity, or will we adopt the path of global solidarity? We can’t return to normal, because the normal that we had was precisely the problem. The lesson to be learned is that superiority exists where the economy is based on the collective and not on profit.
