Refugio

Refugio (2020 - ongoing) tells about how the allotment garden of the Photographer Paulina Hildesheim became her photographic refuge in times of the global pandemic.

300 square meters land, 18 square meters house.

An allotment garden on the outskirts of Berlin becomes the photographer's rescue in face of the rising pandemic. Every previous attempt to photograph her garden has been given up, as no picture could properly display the place. But in the moment when everything around her seems to stand still and at the same time a deadly virus is milling through society, she somehow lost this blockade. Photographing this garden helped her to face the fear of the uncertain and to fill the emptiness.

The allotment garden becomes a refuge and a photographic playground. What is more a game at first gradually develops into a routine and remains as a lifeline after two winters of pandemic.
