PASQUA_sia

Pasqua_sia is a photographic investigation of Pasquasia, an abandoned Sicilian mine. A place of silence and mystery, where echoes of the past and present void intertwine, hinting at buried truths never fully revealed.

Pasquasia is more than just an abandoned mine in the Sicilian hinterland; it is a place of absence and unease, a void that seems to whisper secrets never told. Entering this space felt like crossing the threshold of an abyss where time has stood still and the echo of human labor still resounds among the salt walls.

The silence that envelops the mine is deafening, as if each stone preserves the memory of hands that are no longer there, of voices that have ceased to exist. Rusted structures, tunnels shrouded in darkness, desolate landscapes — and yet, it is the emptiness that speaks the loudest. A void that seeps into the cracks of the images, passes through the lens, and pours into the soul of the observer, leaving behind a sense of oppression and unresolved mystery.

My obsession with this place led me to investigate further, to try and fill the gaps the initial images had left open. I explored the surrounding landscape, attempting to reconstruct a connection between the land and its depths. But Pasquasia remains an enigma: tales intertwine with suspicions of hidden stories, of waste that may lie buried beneath layers of salt, of secrets kept far from the sunlight.

This mine became my obsession. Each time I returned to explore it, it seemed to pull me deeper, beyond the surface of things, to a point where the image alone was no longer enough, and the desire to understand collided with the fear of uncovering something. And so I tried to capture that moment of suspension — that instant when the gaze is lost in darkness and the echo of an unresolved past emerges, leaving behind only questions.

“PASQUA_sia” is a journey through a place that seems to resist any clear definition. It is a photographic investigation, but also a confrontation with the persistent feeling that, beneath the surface of that salt, lies a truth that may not be meant to be revealed.
