Matrescence

The definition of matrescence is simply the process of becoming a mother. It's the social, psychological, emotional and physical affects a woman goes through to become a mother.

From girl to woman, from woman to mother, matrescence is the essence of transition. This project was made in dedication to both the mothers you see in these images, and the mothers who aren't. It's for every girl that became a woman, and transformed into a mother.

Not only this - but it's also dedicated to the girls and women who cant have kids, or just simply don't want children, because despite this motherhood is something we can all cherish.

For we are the daughters of our mothers.

The project explores matrescence through archive images of mothers when they were just girls. Before they were given the responsibility of new life. There's metaphorical imagery, to translate the process of matrescence as its not often something to be seen, but is instead quietly felt. There's also intimate portraits, of mothers and their children, taken by both myself and the mothers and children themselves. This project was a collaboration with mothers for mothers.
