Mamydette

This is a project about my grand-mother and the end of life

The pandemic brought me back to France and as a blessing allowed me to spend time with my grand-mother, Mamydette. She is 95 years old. She wants to go and yet she is scared of when it will happen. Like most people she is afraid of dying alone. What is going through the mind of someone who is waiting to die? Someone who wants to go not because they don’t want to live but because they feel they have reached the end. How do we free ourselves from the fear of dying? Can we learn to die? Being by her side every day, against the backdrop of a global pandemic, and witnessing the contradiction between her peaceful appearance and the tumult inside her mind, led me to think about death and question my attitude towards my own mortality. With photography I want to accompany her though this journey and appease her experience of going away.
