Lagos in London is a photo series capturing the bold elegance of different Nigeria traditional attire, regal Yoruba attire, worn not in the heart of Lagos or Ibadan but amidst the multicultural rhythms of South London Peckham.
Lagos in London
Lagos in London is an ongoing documentary photography series I created in Peckham, South London, exploring identity, cultural pride and the lived experience of the Nigerian diaspora in one of London's most vibrant and multicultural communities.
The project was born from something I kept seeing and could not stop thinking about. People moving through Peckham in full traditional Nigerian attire, regal Yoruba agbada, rich ankara fabric, beautifully wrapped gele, not dressed for a wedding or a celebration, but simply going about their day. Shopping at the market, walking the high street, living their lives. There was so much dignity and intention in that. It felt like a statement, even if it was not meant to be one.
What this series is really investigating is how a community holds onto its cultural identity in a place far from home, and what it means to exist fully between two worlds without choosing one over the other. Peckham becomes the stage where Lagos and London do not just meet but genuinely coexist, where Nigerian heritage is not preserved behind glass but worn, expressed and lived out loud on the streets every single day.
For me this project is deeply personal. It is about documenting a community that refuses to be invisible, that carries the weight and beauty of its culture with confidence in spaces that were not built with them in mind. In doing so they are quietly reshaping what South London looks like and who it belongs to.
Lagos in London is still growing because this story is still being written. There are more faces, more garments and more corners of Peckham that deserve to be seen.
