Invisible Cities

In “Invisible Cities” series the city stops being a geographical concept and becomes a fable. Are nature and culture opposed? Is the city a threat? How to reconcile the social organization of the human species with the preservation of natural spaces?

The continuous process of deforestation and urban expansion is one of the relevant factors of climate change. The “Invisible Cities” series emerged, however, from an event in which the opposite occurred. In Brasília, as a result of a historic popular mobilization, an extensive area of native forest, where the construction of almost thirty buildings had been authorized, was transformed into Water Springs Park. In this case, nature won over the city.

All photographs of the natural landscape were taken in this park. Images, shapes and shadows were superimposed on them, some more, others less defined, which suggest a symbolic idea of the city or human intervention. As occurs in the well-known book of the same name by Ítalo Calvino, in the images of “Invisible Cities” the city stops being a geographical concept and becomes a metaphor, fable, imagination. Are nature and culture opposed or can they be harmonized? Is the city a threat? How to reconcile the social organization of the human species with the preservation of natural spaces?
