The Interstates Project is a multimedia sustained investigation positioned around a 14-state, multi-day roadtrip and encapsulating the exploration of performance, personas, and character building along Historic Route 66.

Interstates is a multimedia project by William Hohe and Charlotte Watson, exploring performance, personas, and American identity along Route 66. Spanning 14 states and over 5,000 miles, the project reflects on the death of the American road trip and the state of the nation in 2024.

Through over 50 photoshoots, Interstates examines the intersection of place, character, and storytelling. This exhibition presents 14 personas, each representing a different state and embodying elements of fantasy, critique, and cultural observation. Charlotte serves as the primary model, while William acts as principal photographer, collaborating on styling, posing, and artistic direction.

Interstates extends beyond documentation, challenging notions of movement, memory, and national mythology. The project invites viewers to reconsider how we define place, self, and cultural narratives through the lens of a changing America.

This exhibition is the first iteration of a larger body of work that will continue to evolve, documenting the ever-shifting landscapes—both physical and ideological—of the United States.
