Unpredictability, restlessness, explosiveness are keywords with which one can describe both the condition of adolescence and that of an active volcano. How could the tumult of youth and the inquietude of volcanic activity dialogue together?

Unpredictability, restlessness, explosiveness are keywords with which one can describe both the condition of adolescence and that of an active volcano. How could the tumult of youth and the inquietude of volcanic activity dialogue together?

After photographing for more than three years the teens living on the small volcanic islands of the Aeolian archipelago in southern Italy, I wondered how to visually represent this symbolic juxtaposition. By working alongside both volcanologists and teenagers inhabiting the islands of the archipelago ( Stromboli, Vulcano and Salina ), I tried to find a way to visually represent their emotional intertwining with active and quiescent volcanoes, passing from fear, through fascination, to peaceful cohabitation. A central tension of the project lies then in the contrast between living at the mercy of unregulated phenomena and the spontaneous and free-spirited way in which young people embrace uncertainty and become a part of it, in opposition to the scientific gaze and its need to control, monitor and tame the unpredictability of eruptions.

Clermont Auvergne University researchers measure the temperature of Volcano, June 2023. Volcanologists from alla over the world have been monitoring the heath level and gas emissions from the crater of Vulcano since last big explosion in 1889.

A sismograph from the Italian INGV ( Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia) while monitoring Stromboli volcano on July 3rd 2019. During the summer of 2019, two high-intensity explosive eruptions occurred in Stromboli, known as paroxysms, which temporarily disrupted the volcano's ordinary explosive activity, known as Strombolian activity.
