Every summer, on the eve of the Assumption of Mary (15 August), the residents of the small Aegean island of Psara gather at the island’s monastery. After the evening liturgy, the community shares revithada, a traditional chickpea stew slowly cooked overnight in large pots.
The gathering is both religious and social. Families, neighbours and visitors come together around long communal tables, sharing bread, food and conversation. For many, it is also an opportunity to reconnect with people they have not seen for months.
In a small island community where traditions are still actively lived, the preparation and sharing of revithada becomes a ritual that brings together faith, food and collective memory.
