Fun Fairs Youth
In this photographic series, a nuanced and revealing portrayal unfolds of young individuals in the vibrant atmospheres of fun fairs across the Netherlands. As a documentary portrait photographer, I am deeply drawn to the intricate ways individuals interact—from couples sharing quiet moments to groups of friends bursting with energy. This collection goes beyond mere facial expressions; it delves into how these young individuals navigate and position themselves within the lively atmosphere of the fair, capturing the essence of their experiences.
My approach to photography is distinct—I prefer to use a medium format analog camera. This choice not only slows down the photography process but also stands in stark contrast to the fast-paced nature of today's world, particularly evident in the lives of the youth. By inviting these young individuals to pause for a moment and step away from the day-to-day rush, I observe an initial presentation of confidence and toughness. However, as they stand in front of the camera, these facades gradually drop, revealing a vulnerability that resonates deeply with my own memories of adolescence. This moment of genuine openness highlights the transient yet profound emotional landscape of youth, offering a perspective that is both unique and rich in contrasts.
Through this method, I aim to highlight the vulnerability and genuine nature of our younger generation, preserving the fleeting moments of youth at fun fairs—moments that might otherwise be lost in the whirlwind of life. This series not only documents but celebrates these brief, revealing interludes, capturing the vibrant essence and delicate human connections that form the heart of each Fun Fair.
