Favorite Book Project

“Favorite Book Project” is my modest photography/documentary project about people I know and what they read.

Since I was a teenager I read a lot of books. My father had an extensive collection of the world’s literature in our home: endless shelves of classic and modern novels, short stories and essays. I read almost all of that, but later in my life I stopped, or almost stopped reading books. Maybe it is because of the Internet, TV, or social media, I don’t know. But I always felt the void, had those vivid memories of cuddling myself in a blanket at my parents' country house and reading through the night… Lately I decided to get back the reading habit of my youth, but had no idea what to read actually. So, I decided to look around and see what my family, friends and acquaintances read. Thus my project was born. I called it a “Favorite Book Project” or “FavBookProject” is how I call it on Instagram. I turned it into a modest photography project about people and what they read. I asked participants to choose the favorite book of their choice, get photographed with that book and later give me a few lines why this book is important to them. Was it great literature, or reading this book was somehow connected to important things in their lives, or else? This is a continuing project, last year I stopped for a while to take a break, but this year I have a plan to continue by adding more participants. The photography itself is pure documentary: just people in natural settings, no additional lighting or editing. I want to keep it as plain as possible.
