FARAS: The African Chapters

FARAS is a long-term photographic project documenting Africa’s disappearing and evolving horse cultures through an intimate, contemporary lens. The project explores the relationship between horses, landscape, identity, tradition and the communities who continue to live alongside them.

The resulting book is conceived as four geographic chapters: South, East, West and North, tracing distinct horse cultures across the African continent. The South chapter begins in Lesotho, where the Basotho pony remains deeply embedded in the country’s cultural identity and mountain communities. The project then moves east through Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa, west into the horse cultures of Nigeria and the Sahel, and north towards Morocco and the traditions of the Barb horse.

The book is deliberately being developed over time, allowing each chapter to be photographed from within its own cultural and geographic context rather than imposing a single narrative across the continent.

The images submitted here are from Lesotho, the completed first section of FARAS. The East (Ethiopia) is being photographed during September/October 2026.

The West and North chapters are currently in development and will require further fieldwork and funding to complete.
