Emergence is a collection of works captured in Tasmania's southwest during a six-day expedition along the Western Arthurs Traverse. These images signify the coming to light of my true self and feature the hiking colleague who helped me find it.
A little over a year ago, I embarked on my first multi-day trek in Tasmania, Australia. Beginning with short day trips within the Central Plateau, I soon found myself exploring the rugged southwest—a region renowned for Tasmania’s most diverse and demanding terrain. Among these was the Western Arthurs, a challenging 80km hike with a 3,000m combined elevation gain, spanning six days. No facilities and basic platform camping.
These expeditions initiated a profound transformation within me, reshaping the way I perceived my position, my purpose, and my connection to the world. The physical challenges of these hikes are but one facet of multi-day trekking. Waking up to the discomfort of jagged rocks beneath my inflatable mattress, embracing the chill of slipping cold feet into damp boots, and surrendering the comforts of daily showers and personnel hygiene—these seemingly inconsequential yet pivotal moments unveiled a deeper connection with myself. They honed my ability to redirect my focus during trying circumstances. It was during these moments that I felt the emergence of a part within me, a person I recognized but had never truly met. A version of myself stronger than I had ever imagined, liberated from the shackles of anxiety and fear, wholly aware of her identity and desires. She had patiently waited at the fringes until I was ready.
Now, I stand prepared. Now, I am unburdened.
This emergence signifies the birth of my true self, illuminating the person I am destined to become. I have let go of the past and my former self and discovered my inner strength. I am driven and passionate, setting forth on a path guided by creativity and fervour.
This is the unveiling of myself and the person I can be. This is my emergence into the world.
