Ecotone

2019 . 27 unique pieces . 50x50cm and 50x65cm

Ecotone is a series of 27 collages, which transposes the Japanese technique of Kintsugi into photography. This ancestral savoir-faire - celebrating perfection in imperfection, is traditionally used to restore broken ceramics with gold and lacquer.

Each piece is composed of fragments of torn photographs preciously bound by the Kintsugi process - the gold borders are composed of 3 layers of Urushi lacquer, rice powder and 24ca gold.

These fragments of photographs are the result of the performance, Cassures Sublimées, by Yuko Kaseki, Sherwood Chen and myself during which my photographs are manipulated, crumpled, torn as we move and interact.

Exalting the break/tear as a generator, this work raises the question of perception. What is considered deteriorated, diminished by some, is for others a sign of an additional dimension.

My name is Morvarid K. I am a French-Iranian photographer, born in 1982 in Tehran and currently based in France. Through the manipulation of photographic material, my work questions life and human's relationship to the world, transformative memory, and the in-between.

The shooting is the starting point, my anchor in reality, my visual observation of the world. The photographic print then becomes a material, the basis of my creation, charged with complementary imprints that photography cannot record.
