Double Trouble

Double Trouble uses analog double exposure to bring separate fragments of reality into new relationships. Starting from photography’s factual nature, the series explores how perception can transform what already exists.

Double Trouble is an ongoing analog photography series that explores the possibility of transforming reality by changing the relationships between things that already exist. Through double exposure, separate moments, people, places, and visual fragments are brought together within a single image, creating new relationships and alternative realities.

The work is rooted in an intuitive process of looking and connecting. A photograph is not necessarily understood as a finished image, but as something that can be continued through another image. One element can become the context for another, a space can acquire a new presence, or an existing subject can be displaced into a different visual environment. The purpose of these combinations is not simply to create an illusion, but to shift the meaning of what is already there. By changing the context, the same person, place or object can begin to suggest something else.

This is particularly significant in relation to the human figure. Rather than using photography to establish identity or produce a conventional portrait, the work uses the surrounding image to alter and complicate that identity. The person becomes part of a larger visual relationship, where physical appearance is no longer the only way of understanding their presence.

The analog process is inseparable from this approach. Each exposure requires anticipation, memory and intuition, while the final image cannot be fully known in advance. After the film is developed, the negatives are examined again, revealing unexpected overlaps, transitions and possibilities. Some images emerge from more than two exposures, while elements that might normally be discarded become part of the final image. The photograph is therefore constructed through a process of photographing, remembering, waiting, discovering and reframing.

Double Trouble uses the factual nature of photography as a starting point for constructing something that is not factual as a whole. By combining fragments of reality rather than inventing them, the series explores how perception can reshape what is already there.
