Coral

Coral reefs are the largest living structure on the planet, highly evolved from symbioses, which form this rich and diverse habitat where all shapes, colours and types contribute to something so brilliant it can be seen from space.

My visual journey began with the shape of a piece of coral that I wear around my neck. I saw my mother and grandmother wearing small shapes and for me it became a symbol, a link to everyday life, rituals, nature, our environment and how I relate to them or how they relate to me.

This almost surreal structure creates the unexpected, dissects movement or deciphers ritual. It extracts an image from reality, from rituals and movements that go unnoticed. It creates elements from another world.. Where people are irrefutably present at a specific moment or part of their lives, it brings together a moment that, in the blink of an eye, has already been broken, changed its path and begun to follow another destiny. It's a fragment open to interpretation and inimitable beauty.

We often forget that our view of the world is shaped not only by sight, but also by our bodily and sensory experience of the world. By paying attention to our environment, to the rhythms of daily life, to history and culture both personal and shared, we consciously or unconsciously seek out that which binds us to one another, and it is in this that photography comes to the fore as a medium that enables a fluidity of connection between people who are each seeking their place in this world, a way of taking care of ourselves with and through the other.

These works speak of solitude or connection, but together they merge to form an emotional meditation on how change alters and shapes, ways of visualising how we adapt and remain, blending into our surroundings as part of a greater whole.

It is ultimately a series of visual notes or a translation of my own cosmology. I would love for this project to start forming a reef, where in shape, size, colors and materials all come together.

This series contains only analogue collages, modified by cuts, tape, colours, folios and found paper. As an artist, I concentrate on photography and mixed media. While developing my practice by building layers, creating a visual narrative, mixing documentary work, collages with a personal approach to materials and diverse sources. This is what I see, not just a recording, but an evolution of another form.
