Chronicles of Shifting Ice

Through Chronicles of Shifting Ice, Josee Schryer discovers a small village in Northern Quebec, a territory that is still inhabited by inuit people. In the manner of the great explorers, she compiles her observations using photography. Inspired by writer and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft and particularly by her letters written on her numerous sea voyages, Schryer instills in her photographs a personal and intimate vision of this remote, harsh but beautiful place. Her experiences and observations are tinted by the fact that she is a woman traveling alone and finding herself isolated in a village accessible only by plane or by boat during the summer months. Chronicles of Shifting Ice is a tale of adventure, an expedition logbook, a collection of letters written for the ones waiting patiently for her return down south.

''Letter I.

Eleven days of weariness on board a vessel not intended for the accommodation of passengers have so exhausted my spirits, to say nothing of the other causes, with which you are already sufficiently acquainted, that it is with some difficulty I adhere to my determination of giving you my observations, as I travel through new scenes, whilst warmed with the impression they have made on me."
