An Dùil Latha Bealltainn

"An Dùil Latha Bealltainn" is a photo series about traveling around Scotland while awaiting the celebration of Beltane. Shot on 120 film, developed by myself.

"An Dùil Latha Bealltainn" is the result of my April 2024 trip to Scotland. "An Dùil Latha Bealltainn" translates to "Anticipating Beltane" in the Scottish Gaelic. This trip was a pilgrimage to my ancestral home. I longed to feel the ancient magic of the land, to connect with the clans of old. Beltane is a holiday celebrated in various pagan cultures, and popularized in the modern witchcraft movement. Beltane is a departure from the winter season and the arrival of springtime. My journey around Scotland brought me to some of the most hardened and dramatic landscapes, meeting some of the warmest and kindest people. And then there was "Ràinig Bealltainn", or, "Arrival of Beltane", to close out my image series. The great celebration of the holiday was complete with costumes and performers and people who feel the magic of the world, and fire. Plenty of fire.
