'93: PUNCHING THE LIGHT

When I was 16, I began documenting this rare and vivid time in history. These images come from these hallways and warehouse dance floors of 1992-1993, capturing the people, the style and the culture of this incredible time.

‘93: Punching The Light

A vivid exploration of Sydney’s burgeoning rave culture in the early ’90s, '93: Punching the Light captures the raw energy, style, and spirit of a transformative era. At just 17 years old, I immersed myself in this electrifying scene, documenting the warehouses, clubs, and people that defined it. Guided by a teacher who saw my potential—met me at a rave at 4 a.m. to teach me composition and I embarked on my first photography project, blending images with diary entries and collected flyers.

These materials lay forgotten for over two decades, tucked away in my childhood home until my parents sold the house in 2015 when I rediscovered them. This sparked a three-year journey to assemble the book, blending youthful wonderment with the intimacy of lived experience. Published in 2019 by Damiani Books, '93: Punching the Light is a time capsule of a vibrant culture and a testament to the thrill of creative discovery.
