Portofino Residency 2024

About

Since 2021, Portofino Dry Gin and PhMuseum have been inviting visual artists to offer their interpretation of the Italian Riviera.

In the past few years, artists-in-residence Alejandro Chaskielberg, Piergiorgio Sorgetti and Martina Giammaria have all contributed with their vision, giving shape to different and personal perspectives of the iconic village of Portofino, Liguria and its surroundings. Solo exhibitions with their residency work have been curated and produced as part of PhMuseum Days International Photography Festival in Bologna and Milan.

With summertime approaching, we aim to invite a Mexican or Mexico-based photographer to join this legacy. The selected artist will propose and shoot an editorial project following their own poetics. The work shall be related to the PhMuseum Days 2024's theme CLOSER, an invitation to open up, share, observe things more carefully, and consider how contamination, partiality, and subjectivity are intrinsic parts of looking at reality.

Portofino Dry Gin will recognize an artist fee (€1000), cover the travel expenses (up to €2000), the stay in Portofino from 10 to 14 June (worth €2000), shooting expenses (up to €500). PhMuseum will take care of the exhibition curation and present a work preview at PhMuseum Days on 12-15 September in Bologna, Italy. The work will be eventually exhibited in Mexico towards the end of the year, thanks to the support of the Mexican distributor Coop Spirits.

“When I arrived in Portofino I entered a long and mysterious stone tunnel to reach the sunny botanical gardens, which overlook the Mediterranean Sea. It was a very symbolic journey towards enlightenment for me and from that first moment I was astonished at what awaited me. I explored and photographed Portofino for several nights to capture the unique and charming atmosphere of the place and to create my vision of the town in its new colours.”
Alejandro Chaskielberg, Portofino Dry Gin Resident Artist in 2021

“Human bodies merge with a landscape of light, wind, water, rock and plants, following a sound imperceptible to us. At the same time, an artificial intelligence gives shape to a dream within a dream, generating images that manifest themselves by typing the word Portofino. A reflection of a collective memory, my project Dreams Of A Blue Garden invited us to confront our perception of reality and to explore those elements that represent a place in our memories and emotions”
Martina Giammaria - Portofino Dry Gin Resident Artist in 2023

FAQs

  • If selected, will I retain full rights on my photographs?

Yes, you will retain full copyright at all times. To accept the prize you will need to sign a licensing contract with Portofino Dry Gin to authorize the brand to use 20 of your images on the web, on social media, and in physical environments as exhibitions and private events.
  • Is it possible to apply as a collective?

Yes, you can apply as a collective. Members will split the fee and the traveling funding.
  • What kind of link am I expected to include as a portfolio url?

You are welcome to link to your website, or to a pdf including a selection of your works, with no limitation regarding size, format, or number of pages. Just make sure to provide the jury with a succinct overview on your practice, allowing them to understand its peculiarities and quality.
  • What should I include in the motivational paragraph?

Tell us about you and why you think you can be a good fit for this project. Prepare a rough description of the idea(s) you’d be interested in developing in Portofino, in consideration of the theme CLOSER.
  • Is there a theme the project proposal should follow?

In your approach, we invite you to offer your own interpretation of CLOSER, the theme of the next edition of the PhMuseum Days. We live in an era in which it is not possible to imagine any objective detachment between us and reality. Observation itself touches and changes things, every story is contamination. The works we are looking for do not attempt to achieve an impossible neutrality, but accept the partiality that comes from looking closely. They make intimacy their strength: in interpersonal relationships as much as in that with the territory, with history, and with living beings. An invitation to open up, to share, to observe things more carefully, beyond prejudices and stereotypes.
  • How do I know my application was successfully submitted?

You will see a confirmation message just after submitting, and receive a confirmation email at the email address you signed up with.
