Workshop with Penelope Umbrico - Web as Archive / Appropriation and Useful Photography - a Tool-Kit

In this workshop with Penelope Umbrico, the surplus of visual information on the web will become a vast archive of material from which to draw. It will become a space in its own right: one where taking pictures is virtually the same as taking pictures on the street.

In this context, appropriative practice, implicit in all aspects of photography, becomes explicit. We will explore ideas of appropriation through various strategies artists have used: cut and paste, decontextualization, transformation, collage, juxtaposition, etc. We will breakdown these strategies, looking at how they engage in a critical dialogue with the sourced material.

By participating in this workshop you will engage and reflect on the shifts between authorship and originality, the public and the private, the collective and the individual. Penelope Umbrico will demonstrate how she uses these ideas and techniques in her own work, and the necessity of intention and rationale in the use of found images.

The workshop will culminate with an exercise to assess the usefulness of found images. What possible strategies can be employed to work with them as starting points, or as tools, for the development of a body of work?

Workshop with Karla Hiraldo Voleau - Love Language Online, Today

How do we communicate today, as lovers? How is the online environment shaping the way we speak of love, be it through words or images? Unlock the expressive power of photography and embark on a journey through the digital age of love with photographer Karla Hiraldo Voleau.

In this immersive two-day workshop participants will be asked to explore their own love stories, and more specifically, the visual and verbal language that belongs to them. They will be asked to bring in personal content used to communicate with a loved one - be it photography, letters, notes, conversations with loved ones, found exchanged images, memes, drawings, collages, screenshots. Starting from this material, and from references such as Pasolini’s Comizi d’Amore and Barthes’ Frammenti di un Discorso Amoroso, the participants will interview each other about love, delve as a group into their emotional selves, and eventually build a collective, narrative series, able to shape and communicate their stories.

When and Where: 30 Sept and 1 Oct 2023, from 10am to 2pm

Workshop with The Cool Couple - Oblique Strategies

"The limits of my language mean the limits of my world" - Ludwig Wittgenstein

The world is changing faster and faster, and sometimes it seems that words are not enough to describe what is happening. In this workshop, you will have the chance to explore how verbal and visual language meet, examining the power of neologisms as a tool to analyze different aspects of our daily lives.

During the first phase of the workshop, participants will work together with the tutors to create new words and terms that express concepts and experiences that may not have a direct correspondence in the existing vocabulary. This exercise will allow us to explore the most intimate and personal aspects of our lives, as well as wider and general phenomena, in a creative and original way.

In the second phase, these new definitions will be employed to generate images through the use of artificial intelligence. We will explore the use of text-to-image generators and computer vision algorithms that are able to synthesize an image starting from a textual command.

By participating in this workshop, you will have the opportunity to reflect on the role of datasets in influencing our imagination, and on the way word-image interaction can open up new perspectives on our interpretation of reality.

Workshop with Marisol Mendez - Portraiture and the Gaze

What does capturing a person’s essence entail? How can a photographer establish a sense of trust and intimacy with their subjects?

Designed for photographers and artists seeking to reflect on gaze and its significance within photography, this workshop with photographer Marisol Mendez will explore the nuanced implications of portrait creation. It will critically reassess and reshape the way we approach the representation of others, and the way we position ourselves when portraying someone.

Starting from visual and theoretical references fostering a deeper understanding of the medium, participants will exercise their critical reading of images, growing towards a more empathic gaze. Working collaboratively, they will be equipped with both technical and expressive resources to produce portraits, and investigate their narrative possibilities.
