A Guide To July 2023 Photo Awards & Opportunities

Circulation(s) Call for Applications, InCadaqués Festival Open Call 2023, Meitar Award For Excellence in Photography, Open Call Rotlicht 2023, Head On Photo Awards are among the opportunities we selected this month.

Circulation(s) Call for Applications / Deadline 23 July / Entry fee € 20

Organised by the 9-members Fetart collective bringing together independent curators, Circulation(s) exhibits emerging contemporary photography in Paris every year, shaping an adventurous and innovative program that questions the boundaries between photography and contemporary art.

All photographers of European nationality and/or resident in Europe, who never had a major exhibition in France, can apply to have their work selected and produced as an exhibition for the 2024 edition of Circulation(s) festival. 

With an entry fee of € 20 (reduced to  €10, if applying before June 30), submissions are welcome until July 23. More information is to be found on the festival’s website

InCadaqués Festival Open Call 2023 / Deadline 20 July / Entry fee € 22 

With an intimate and festive atmosphere, the International InCadaqués photography festival each year fosters discovery and creation within the photographic industry.

Through the Open Call, seventeen artists will be selected to exhibit their projects during the 2023 edition of the festival. Fourteen of them will have three images selected and exhibited, with production costs covered and a VIP festival pass, while photographers awarded by the Special Mention InCadaqués prize will be granted an exhibition of a series of 10 to 20 photographs, plus accomodation during the opening weekend. Additionally, the Premi Fotografia Femenina InCadaqués x Fisheye Magazine celebrates women visions in photography by producing a 10 to 15-photographs exhibition during the festival, plus media coverage in Fisheye Magazine.

Meitar Award For Excellence in Photography / Deadline 2 July / Entry fee $ 54 (50 € approx.)

Resulting from the collaboration of festival PHOTO IS:RAEL and the Zvi and Ofra Meitar Family Fund, The Meitar Award for Excellence in photography is each year awarding one practitioner whose work demonstrates thought, quality, and originality, as well as the potential to be suitable for a solo exhibition.

Out of twenty finalists, all showcased in a group exhibition at the International Photography Festival in Tel-Aviv, the awarded photographer will receive a $14,000 (1278 € approx.) prize which comprises a personal grant of $ 2,500 (2280 € approx.), curatorial guidance, and the production of a solo exhibition to be included in the 2024 edition of the festival.

With an entry fee of $ 54 (50 € approx.), the Meitar Award For Excellence in Photography is open for submissions until July 2. Find out more on their website.

Open Call Rotlicht 2023 / Deadline 31 July / Entry fee €15 

At its third edition, Rotlicht 2023 will take place in Vienna this November. Entirely dedicated to artistic reflection in and through analog photography, the festival is each year selecting twenty practitioners through their open call, resulting in a collective exhibition at The Studio Building of the Academy of Fine Arts.

Submissions should be related to the theme »Zeitgeist«, acknowledging the different characteristics and influences of each time period: a call to invite critical engagement towards the pressing issues of our time. Works that have gone through at least one decisive analog process, be it while photographing or printing, are eligible. 

With a € 15 entry fee, applications are open until July 31. Read more on their website.

Head On Photo Awards / Deadline 16 July / Entry fee AUD$25 (€15 approx.)

The Head On Photo Awards has been selecting photographic work since 2004. Divided in four genres, the prize has an overall $70,000 prize pool.

Other than the two traditional sections Portrait and Landscape, and the Student category designed to nurture emerging talent, this year the Awards comprises a fourth genre - the Head On Environmental Awards by Australian Geographic, aiming to highlight specific issues related to the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, sustainable practices, and more.

Each section’s winner accesses a $10,000 prize, while all finalists will be exhibited in the Finalists’ Exhibition during Head On Photo Festival 2023 in Sydney. With an entry fee of €15, you can apply until July 16. Find out more on their website.
