PhotoVogue returns to Milan, Italy, coinciding with fashion month, promising even more vibrancy and engagement, and reflecting its integral place within the Vogue family.
Overview
Mark your calendars and ensure you're in Milan in March for a profound exploration of our bonds with nature. This year's theme transcends the traditional scope of visual art, advocating a fundamental shift in how we interact with our planet and its inhabitants. It draws on the poignant belief that the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated, as quoted by Mahatma Gandhi. The festival will extend this concept to include not only familiar animals but also those often overlooked, emphasizing their deep emotions and essential roles in preserving our ecosystem.
Drawing inspiration from the book Kinship: Belonging in a World of Relations by The Center for Humans and Nature, the festival resonates with the idea of a shared community of life. This includes everything from the bacteria in our bellies to the trees that breathe life into our atmosphere, affirming that all forms of life are our kin. This year, PhotoVogue is honored to partner with Parley for the Oceans, whose dedication to ocean preservation and anti-climate change efforts significantly enhance our collective endeavor.
As PhotoVogue continues to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through its initiatives, the festival is not just an event but a platform for change. Whether it's through wildlife documentary photography, environmentally conscious fashion shoots, or videos that explore symbiotic relationships within ecosystems, we seek submissions that inspire change and foster hope. Celebrating our bond with nature and focusing on its beauty and resilience rather than its mistreatment, the festival aims to nurture a global community grounded in empathy and respect for all life forms.
Over the four days of the festival, attendees can expect a dynamic schedule of exhibitions, panel discussions, and interactive sessions, each designed to deepen our care and respect for the entire family of life that shares our planet. The agenda and list of speakers ensure a rich and engaging experience for all participants.
The wide program includes talks such as Introduction To The Prix Pictet, a conversation between Alessia Glaviano and Isabelle von Ribbentrop (Executive Director of the Prix Pictet), The World On Fire, a Lectio Magistralis by Richard Mosse. Among the round tables are Our Planet, Our Responsibility: Environment, Climate Change And Social Issues with photographers Salvador Saavedra, Christopher Rogel Blanquet, Ali Marin, Charlie Cordero, Khashayar Javanmardi, Oded Wagenstein, Maria di Stefano, Andrea Alessi, Irene Ottaviani, Javier Alvarez, moderated by Afsaneh Rafii. Beyond Borders: Diaspora And Representation is a conversation among photographers Laura Gauch, Sergio Pontier, Diego Vourakis, Villerx Perez, Ayomide Tejuoso, Fidelio Faustino, Koral Carballo, Ramona Wang, Carolina Arantes, Chris Perez, Félix Márquez, moderated by Jordan Anderson.
A series of projections, screening and contributions from organizations involved in environmental advocacy will be part of the festival's agenda. Among them are Human Visions by PhMuseum, featuring works reflecting on humanity's relationship with the environment, selected for the PhMuseum 2024 Women Photographers Grant. Projections also include a short video inspired by Keggie Carew's book Beastly. The film examines the evolution of the kinship relationship between humans and the animal world, exploring its significance through history, culture and science, and making a compelling case for animals as key to the health of the planet.
The festival also includes three main exhibitions. The Tree Of Life: A Love Letter To Nature showcases the works of the artists selected from the global open call. This year's theme deep dives into our relationship with animals and the whole planet, the challenges we're facing caused by environmental change, the communities and individuals who are fighting to save the Earth, promoting a more sustainable way of living and interacting with it. The exhibition shows both the fragilities and the beauty of our Planet, and offers a hopeful reflection on the contemporary and the possible paths we can take for a more just future.
The Latin American Panorama exhibition celebrates the creativity from Latin America and its diaspora. Created in occasion of Vogue Mexico & Latin America’s 25th anniversary, the Local open call has gathered talented artists whose works depict the multilayered essence of the region. From environmental and documentary to fashion photography, through their work the artists will deal with urgent matters and analyse the multiculturalism of the region.
Fashion and nature have long shared a symbiotic relationship, where beauty and creativity flourish through inspiration drawn from the natural world. As part of the 9th edition of the PhotoVogue Festival, In Vogue With Nature celebrates Vogue’s legacy of promoting environmental awareness, sustainability, and the deep connection between fashion and the planet across its global editions.
