GU.PHO. is a vernacular festival held in the beautiful setting of the castle of Guiglia, in the province of Modena, Italy.

Overview

The third edition of the festival will occupy a long weekend in June: it will open its doors on Thursday, June 20, with a screening of Ryota Nakano's film Family Photo, and through Sunday, June 23, vernacular photography will be discussed with Michele Smargiassi, Sugar Paper, Lukas Birk, Joan Fontcuberta, PetriPaselli and Erik Kessels.

The artists involved with their exhibitions will be Lukas Birk, Jean-Marie Donat, Erik Kessels with Karel de Mulder and Thomas Sauvin, Chantal Rens, Alessandra Calò, Maurizio Locatelli, Sara Munari, PetriPaselli, Sergio Smerieri, Family Archives, Cartacea Galleria, Mezaluna Association and Vernacular Social Club.

Four days of talks and exhibitions to talk about vernacular photography, that is, images taken by ordinary (non-professional) people to everyday life situations, for personal use. It is the application of photography to the native, private, village or family dimension, where the goal is to capture a memory or a particular introspective moment. The Guiglia International Vernacular Photography Festival does not intend to regret or make people regret the past times, it does not want to compare different mediums to determine which is the best. GU.PHO. simply wants to reflect on photography, its journey, its change, dwelling on what has perhaps not been said or understood.
