A €15,000 grant will be awarded to an Ireland-based photographer to document twelve female environmental leaders and their local habitat restoration projects across the Midlands.

Overview

The Women in Nature Artist’s Commission is a collaborative initiative between Photo Museum Ireland and the Tóchar Midlands Wetland Restoration project, co-funded by the EU Just Transition Fund. The project seeks to highlight the vital, often overlooked roles women play in climate action and nature restoration across the Irish Midlands. The selected photographer or lens-based artist will be tasked with creating a series of twelve portraits of Women in Nature heroes – individuals pre-nominated for their environmental leadership – alongside evocative imagery of the habitats they are working to protect. By documenting these practitioners and their landscapes, the commission aims to foster community engagement and create a lasting visual record of Ireland’s ecological transition through exhibitions, public installations, and a dedicated publication.

Practical Info

It is open to professional photographers and visual artists aged 18 or older who are resident on the island of Ireland. Applications must be submitted via the official online portal. Submissions require a comprehensive project proposal outlining the applicant's creative approach, a CV, and a portfolio of 10-20 images demonstrating technical and narrative proficiency. A jury of experts will evaluate proposals based on their originality, storytelling impact, and the artist’s proven track record, with the final selection announced shortly after the deadline.

The commission offers a total award of €15,000, which includes a €3,000 travel allowance to cover site visits.
