Reframing Family: Feminist Perspectives Through the Lens Residency 2026

Goethe-Institut invites female-identifying photographers from Bulgaria, Germany, Hungary, and Tamil Nadu to apply for the 2026 residency focused on feminism and family.

Overview

The project aims to open a dialogue about how the concepts of feminism and family intersect and redefine each other across cultures, and generations. Participants will explore how family structures can both support and conflict with feminist ideals, asking whether family itself can be a source of feminist empowerment. The residency will bring together selected artists for a three-week collaborative program in one of three locations Budapest, Chennai or Sofia.

The residency will take place from 19 January to 7 February 2026, offering participants space, mentorship, and production support to develop new photographic work that later will be presented in a collective exhibition in Sofia in June 2026.

Practical Info

The funding covers flights, visa fees, accommodation, a weekly stipend for a three-week residency and production costs.

The residency is open for photographers who identify as a female photographer and are based in Bulgaria, Germany, Hungary or Tamil Nadu (India); have prior work or a strong interest in themes of family and/or feminism; have experience exhibiting their photography; are fluent in English and are available for the full residency period.

Interested photographers are asked to submit a CV, portfolio (PDF or website link), and a short project sketch (maximum 300 words). The subject line of the application email should indicate the preferred residency location Budapest, Chennai, or Sofia.

Completed applications should be sent to kulturna-programa-sofia@goethe.de. Results will be announced by the end of November 2025.
