The Ronan Guillou Grants are launched as part of the Civis Maritimus program, developed by the Eyes Wide Open association, which aims to explore the relationship between Man and the Sea, and to challenge the essential issues facing the Ocean.

Overview

Civis Maritimus invites artists and researchers to think about the relationship between Man and the Sea, two elements of a shared biodiversity and heritage: protecting them means reconnecting with our own nature and preserving us all. In tribute to the photographer from Roscoff, a humanist with a passion for the marine world, who passed away in 2022, Civis Maritimus has chosen to call these creative grants for photographers Bourses Ronan Guillou. Based on the same territory - the Occitanie region - Civis Maritimus invites two photographers from Europe and the southern shores of the Mediterranean, each to produce a committed photographic project.

Two creative bursaries will be awarded to two European photographers from a Mediterranean country, with the challenge for each bursary holder to produce a photographic project focusing on man's relationship with the marine world, around the same territory - Sète, Étang de Thau and the Golfe du Lion.

Practical Info

Projects should explore the issues of our future in synergy with the sea and/or defend a progressive - or militant - vision to radically raise awareness. They may address issues such as ecology, human activity, the notion of heritage, economic and geopolitical stakes, or the territory's relationship with other areas of the Mediterranean basin. They must make reference to the Occitanie region in their approach (thematic, geographical or symbolic), without being obliged to cover the entire region.

Entries highlighting an eco-responsible approach, in terms of the subjects addressed, the techniques used to produce their photographs, and the ways in which they are presented, will be given preference.

Application file to be sent via a single WeTransfer link (less than 50 MB) including a detailed presentation of the subject proposed for the Ronan Guillou 2024 Grant (Man and the marine world, Sète, Etang de Thau and the Gulf of Lion), a recent biography and CV, an artistic file presenting the candidate's main projects and the completed application form.

Each award-winning photographer will receive €4,000 to carry out his or her project. At the end of the residency, he or she undertakes to deliver to the organizers a selection of at least 25 photographs making up the project, accompanied by captions and a presentation text - any other elements likely to complete the project will be welcome (preparatory sketch, notebook or sketches, other multimedia or sound supports, etc.). The award-winning photographers assign to the organizers their copyrights until December 31, 2024 on the selection of 25 images for use within the exclusive framework of the Civis Maritimus program: exhibition, publishing, internet and social networks.

The two award-winning photographers will have a period of two and a half months to complete their project, with final delivery of the elements due no later than September 15th, 2024. They will be required to be present in Sète on May 7th, 2024 to attend and participate in the opening of the Itinérances Foto tour. They will be provided with accommodation in Sète during the period from May 7th to July 7th, 2024.

The Civis Maritimus program will cover transport to and from Sète and accommodation, in addition to the €4,000 grant awarded to each of the two scholarship photographers. All other costs incurred in the realization of the creative projects supported will be borne by the photographers receiving the grants.
