The aim of the competition is to select the most interesting Polish publications in the field of photography published in the year 2023.

Overview

Authors are invited to submit books where photography takes a central place – albums, catalogs, theoretical books and manuals, as well as limited self-published editions and zines published in 2023. In the competition for the Photographic Publication of the Year, will be awarded those publications that can become an inspiration and present bold concepts, refined graphics, excellent printing, unique photos, and thoughtful design.

Practical Info

Submitted publications should have their publishing premiere between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2023. Only publications published in printed form are eligible for the competition. Both books published by a publishing house and books self-published by authors are eligible for submission to the competition. The submission should include two copies of the publication (one copy for evaluation purposes and one copy for presentation during the exhibition as part of the Fotofestiwal - International Festival of Photography in Łódź), a completed online form along with photographs of the publication (jpg format, up to 5 photos, each max 2MB). Winning publications and publications that qualified for the exhibition will not be returned.

The title of Photographic Publication of the Year and the Main Prize in memory of Krzysztof Makowski, as well as distinctions, will be awarded on June 13 during the opening of Fotofestiwal in Łódź, where publications that made it to the final shortlist will also be presented.

About Foto Publikacja

The initiator and first organizer of the competition was Krzysiek Makowski – a bookseller and publisher from the now-defunct F5 Bookstore. He managed to organize only two editions before his death – in 2009 and 2010. Since 2013, the competition has been jointly organized by: Fotofestiwal International Festival of Photography in Łódź, Bookoff Bookstore, and Miejsce Fotografii (Place of Photography), and since 2019 also by Służewski Dom Kultury. They want the competition to stimulate creators to action and ambitious explorations. So that as a result, publishers and authors approach the medium of the book boldly and creatively. In previous years, the exhibition of awarded and distinguished books could be seen during the Photography Festival in Łódź, TIFF Festival in Wrocław, and at the Służewski Dom Kultury in Warsaw.
