Overview

Boutographies is a festival dedicated to new European photography, founded in 2001 in the Boutonnet district of Montpellier, France. The call is open to all European photographers and photographers living in Europe, with no set theme.

Selected photographers for the exhibition receive accommodation for three days during the festival, transport of works, priority access to portfolio readings, and the possibility to receive several prizes. Prize recipients may receive purchase of works up to €5,500, production assistance, paid publications, and royalties of €100. Selected works are included in the festival bookshop, with 97% of sales returned to photographers (minus 3% credit card charges), and in the web bookstore with 85% of sales returned. Selected photographers also receive a 25% reduction from partner Photon and may have one work exhibited in Arles during the Rencontres d'Arles, subject to ongoing partnership.

Photographers selected for the projection receive accommodation for one day, priority access to portfolio readings, partner prizes, production assistance or paid publications, bookshop inclusion with the same sales terms, and €100 royalties. They may also be eligible for the Arles exhibition opportunity.

Practical Info

All amateur or professional photographers from Europe or resident in Europe are eligible. Applicants must submit between 10 and 20 images in JPG format, 2000px for the largest side, along with a CV and presentation text. Images should be full-frame without backgrounds, except for diptychs. Captions should be provided in a separate Word or PDF list.

The selection process has three stages. First, applicants register online via the Boutographies website. Second, the artistic director reviews applications and creates a pre-selection. Third, pre-selected applications are presented to a final jury, which selects works for hanging or projection. Applications not selected by the jury may be chosen for other festival sections such as Parallèle or Hors les Murs.
