Overview

Kulturbegi, organizer of the Basque Dok Festival, announces the BBK Award, aimed to to reinforce the commitment to culture and art through contemporary image, and to recognize those visual projects that address social issues such as exclusion, inequality or vulnerability, using the contemporary image as a tool for reflection and change.

This award is part of the VI edition of Basque Dok Festival, a reference event in documentary photography and contemporary image, which has counted in its previous editions with international figures such as Susan Meiselas, Darcy Padilla, Manu Bravo or Laia Abril, and the support of institutions such as the Basque Government, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and the City Council of Bilbao.

Practical Info

Proposals for photography, video art, audiovisual installation or any other exhibition medium related to the contemporary image will be accepted. Participants must submit a project dossier (max. 10 pages) with the description, objectives and social relevance of the proposal, visual sample of the project (photographs in JPG/PNG format or videos in private link), a CV, and a declaration of authorship stating that the work is original and that the author owns the rights to it.

One selected photographer will be awarded the integral production of the winning project, with a total funding of €10,000, to be distributed as follows: €3,000 for the winning author, in recognition of his or her work and dedication; production of an exhibition, video installation or exhibition proposal, covering all mounting, production and dissemination costs; publication of a catalog or book documenting the creation process and the impact of the project, ensuring its dissemination; and financing of all costs associated with the exhibition and publication, ensuring maximum visibility of the winning work. The exhibition of the winning project will take place in June 2025, at the Sala BBK in Bilbao or another venue chosen by BBK.

About Basque Dok Festival

The Basque Dok Festival of documentary photography is an event that sets out to highlight the new photographic languages that have arisen in the documentary field, the new photojournalism 3.0 and street photography. The programme is made up of exhibitions, workshops and talks to encourage reflection and debate on documentary photography, the new challenges it faces and its development and future with the arrival of new technologies.
