I explore the interplay of nature, tradition, and development in China. This contemplative project reflects on cultural resilience and rapid urbanization, inviting viewers to consider the balance between preservation and progress for a sustainable future.

Studying abroad was an eye-opening experience that exposed me to diverse perspectives and advanced techniques in the field of photography. The fast-paced life and the dynamic environment of the city pushed me to think critically about my work and its impact. However, it was upon my return to China that I truly began to understand the significance of my roots and the rich tapestry of history and modernity that defines my homeland. This realization became the foundation for my current project, which aims to capture the essence of China's evolving landscape through the deliberate and reflective process of large format photography.

The choice of large format photography is integral to the ethos of this project. Unlike the immediacy of digital photography, large format photography requires a slow, deliberate approach. Setting up the camera, composing the shot, and waiting for the right light all demand patience and mindfulness. This slower pace allows for a deeper connection with the subject, encouraging a thoughtful exploration of the themes at hand. Each photograph becomes a meditation on the interplay between nature, tradition, and development, revealing the nuanced relationships that define contemporary China.

In my travels across the country, I have sought out locations where these themes intersect in compelling ways. From the serene landscapes of rural villages, where ancient traditions continue to thrive, to the bustling urban centers that epitomize rapid development, my photographs aim to capture the tension and harmony that coexist within these spaces. The natural world, often seen as a counterpoint to human progress, is portrayed in its majestic beauty and fragility, highlighting the need for a sustainable approach to development that respects and preserves the environment.

Traditional practices and cultural heritage are also central to this project. By documenting festivals, rituals, and everyday life in communities that have maintained their ancestral ways, I aim to showcase the resilience of cultural identity in the face of modernization. These images serve as a reminder of the importance of preserving our heritage even as we embrace progress and innovation.

The element of development is portrayed through the lens of transformation and growth. Rapid urbanization, technological advancements, and economic progress are undeniable forces shaping modern China. My photographs seek to capture the energy and ambition driving these changes, while also questioning the sustainability and impact of such rapid development on both the natural world and cultural traditions.

Ultimately, this project is an invitation to reflect on the possibility of achieving harmony between nature, tradition, and development. Through the careful and contemplative process of large format photography, I hope to offer a visual narrative that prompts viewers to consider the balance we must strive for in our pursuit of progress. This project is not just about documenting change, but about engaging with it thoughtfully and critically, honoring the past while envisioning a sustainable future.
