SAFE PLACE

As a visual artist I am interested in the intangible; in the fears we hide, in what needs to embody through the image leaving the doors open for interpretation.

We have forgotten so many things; We accept what exists as absolute truth and sometimes we forget the origin of things. I was born in a town on the border with Belize, I feel nostalgic for the stories my grandparents told about imaginary beings that dominated the Mayan jungle before the rifles silenced it forever. Over the years I have seen how violence in my country increases.

"Safe Place" is born from the feeling of vulnerability that I feel as a woman living in a country like Mexico, where the maximum deity is the Virgin of Guadalupe, but unfortunately a woman is murdered every 2 hours.

In my work I seek to photograph women with the appearance of deities, in order to make an allegory to that divine woman that Mexicans love and protect so much.

For my country, we are only a statistic in the cog of a developing nation, I want through this project to demonstrate the consequences of losing women and also to feel that there is a safe place for me and for all of us, even if it is only a utopian reality within photography.

I think that as photographers we can change the way people relate to their society. It has become a necessity to create projects that raise awareness about the social problems that surround us through different visual narrative.
