Recidere

Many of us grew up with religion, some stayed, others left. Some found new ways to believe, in their own rhythm. "Recidere" brings together queer voices shaped by different religious traditions.

The photobook concept itself is a reflection of the questions I asked myself: How do we reconcile inherited beliefs with our own sense of self? What does it mean to honor tradition while forging a new path? The concept is also based on my personal way to research my faith, I grew up in a catholic family in Italy and the religious background was a big part of my youth.

By way of background, this project was initially developed as part of a university course in collaboration with Sophie Marie Hermanns, she did the Layout of the Photobook. I am submitting my application as an individual artist, because the core concept and all of the photographs were my own. To give you a clear sense of how the photobook functions, I am including a Video version of the current book so you can see the visual direction and narrative flow as originally conceived.

I want to add more photos and re-visualize the work from additional perspectives. Specifically, I plan to incorporate new portraits and environmental details that deepen the conversation between faith and queerness, exploring intersectional themes such as family rituals, generational memory, and the ways belief systems influence identity over time. By expanding the image set and experimenting with alternative sequencing, I aim to create a layered, dynamic visual narrative that invites viewers to engage more fully with each subject’s story.

Although the collaborative framework has shifted, I believe the project has significant potential to evolve. My intention is to expand and re-visualize this work, deepening its thematic layers, refining the sequencing so that the project can reach a broader audience and resonate more powerfully.
