The gradual disappearance of the Clarisses Convent in the Kaysersberg Valley.
The gradual disappearance of the Clarisses Convent in the Kaysersberg Valley.
First established in the 9th century, the enclosure has spanned time and eras, changing its form, architecture, and function numerous times. Emptied of its last sisters in 2009, it
ultimately succumbed to modern times and human folly, and was left abandoned for a few years. Nature eventually reclaimed its rights there, coexisting alongside extensive
degradation and acts of vandalism.
Housing units now stand upon its ruins. All that remains are the convent’s gate, the well, the northern perimeter wall, a coat of arms, and an inscription attesting to its
thousand-year history.
