Off the coast of Tanzania, Pemba moves at its own pace. This series explores the island's commerce and daily life — the medicine shops stacked floor to ceiling with remedies, the shoe seller whose entire inventory hangs overhead, the bridal dresses glowing in the dark. Goods are displayed with a kind of density and pride that speaks to something deeper than trade. Between these interiors, the island itself: an ox cart on a dusty road, a woman carrying palm fronds, children at play. Pemba is an island that the world has largely left alone, and these photographs sit quietly inside that fact.
