Working with 4x5" large format analogue photography my work explores representations of women and animals with reference to art history and mythology.
Petrina Hicks is an Australian artist who has gained a reputation for her large-scale photographs that draw from mythology, fables, and historical art imagery to re-frame the contemporary female experience.
Hicks’ works are imbued with a sense of magic-realism, animals and females often appearing together to represent aspects of psyche and identity, alluding to the complexity of female identity and the spiritual nature of her relationship with animals.
Petrina Hicks’ work is held in major Australian collections including National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, Art Gallery of Western Australia.
27 September 2019-29 March 2020, National Gallery of Victoria held a major Survey Show of Hicks work, titled ‘Bleached Gothic’. This exhibition included fifty photographs and video works spanning 2005 to 2019 and a NGV published monograph.
24 June-24 September 2021 the Australian Embassy in Paris held a major Survey Show of Hicks work, titled ‘Gothique Blanc’, featuring forty works spanning 2005 to 2019.
1 June-1 July 2023 Michael Reid, Sydney held a major show of Hick’s New Work titled ‘Biophilia’, featuring seventeen new works and three large-scale wallpaper installations.
20 July-3 September 2023 Rifugio Digitale gallery, Florence held Hicks’ first major Italian Survey Show titled ‘Petrina Hicks: Mythologies’
September 7-14, 2023, The City of Florence is projecting Hicks’ work onto the facade of historical buildings at night during ‘Estate Fiorentina 2023’
