I started this project in January 2020, just before the pandemic took hold of the city. I went biking around the five boroughs, documenting the city through the tiny lens of the Minox. It's small and inconspicuous (well it's a spy camera) and the negatives are minuscule (8x11mm), which gives the prints a beautiful grain once enlarged.
When suddenly most "real" work ground to a halt in March, I took the opportunity to really focus on the Minox NYC project, allowing for the slow pace of using film. For the past 11 months, in between the odd editorial shoot, I've been biking and running around shooting a lot of empty places, but also some (worryingly) busy ones, mostly outdoors.
As the city slowly opens up, I'm hoping to be able to also shoot inside of some of the amazing shops, cafés and restaurants I have come across that are just about hanging on in there.
When I started this project, I just wanted to document New York City and all its extraordinariness in general, but it has inadvertently become a project about the truly resilient and multifaceted place that New York City is. The city is struggling, but I am convinced it will come back strong. Changed, but strong, and still extraordinary.
