Portraits of the Masculine

Every day we see women photographed for the world's gaze. In fashion and every other corner. We use women's bodies to sell just about everything. We see women as a sex symbol for men & we see women in female light, showing us how to be the best women we can be. How often do we see the masculine through the female lens? Do we see the man who offers not what he can provide, but just his body and soul, for the gaze of a woman? In a world that is trying to dismantle masculinity, I felt inspired to document a man in a way that doesn't need to provide anything to us but the opportunity to exist, and for me to find so much beauty & emotion inside of that.

This is Eric. He invited me over for sunrise, and I arrived just shortly after. First, I photographed the flower in his front garden, and a few moments of his home, before he poured us coffee. He sampled my stand up comedy material and then, he played music, just for me. A curated playlist of Allan Rayman, Lana Del Rey and a few others. He took his clothes off for me, and let me see his bedroom. I wrote a piece for him after, which I delivered with the collection of images I shot on my Pentax K5.

"...I think of your bed down the hall and find the imprint of you when we pull back the covers. These are the moments that make me feel alive, that bring out the artist in me. I love you, I love this, and I think we should say that every chance we get. I hope my imagery of the morning's moments hit you deep in the belly like sweet coffee & electric guitar. I hope they linger in the air like watery piano keys..."
