Layers

Layers celebrates the act of being present and perceiving the world around us as a response to the accelerated pace of modern life.

Layers is an ongoing analog black-and-white photography series that explores conscious presence and the ability to perceive the world beyond the demands of everyday life. Developed over several years and in different places, the project responds to the accelerated pace of modern life and the diminishing attention given to immediate surroundings.

The photographs emerge from a continuous practice of looking, in which ordinary spaces, objects, traces of use and transient situations become worthy of attention. Rather than searching for exceptional events or visually spectacular subjects, the work focuses on the possibility of finding significance within what is already present. Through photography, everyday reality is temporarily separated from its usual function and encountered as a space of visual relationships, associations and possibilities.

The absence of people as direct subjects is central to the series. Human presence is nevertheless suggested through the environments people have shaped, used and left behind. Objects and spaces become subjects in their own right, while traces of human activity remain as evidence of a presence that is no longer directly visible. This shift allows attention to move away from the human figure and towards the wider world in which it exists.

The analog black-and-white process reinforces this slower way of looking. The reduction of visual information directs attention towards form, light, texture and spatial relationships, while the materiality and relative slowness of the medium create a distance from the immediacy of contemporary visual experience. The photographs also retain a certain temporal ambiguity: without clear geographical or temporal markers, the scenes can appear to belong to different places and moments.

The project remains open-ended. Its images are not connected by a single location, event or predetermined narrative, but by the continuity of the act of observing. Each photograph represents a moment in which attention is deliberately given to something that might otherwise pass unnoticed.

In this sense, Layers approaches photography as a practice of presence. It proposes looking not as a passive act of receiving the world, but as a conscious decision to notice, remain with and assign value to what is already around us. Against the acceleration of everyday life, the project becomes a way of slowing down and affirming the experience of simply being present in the world.
