Interventions is an ongoing study of subtle human marks on the Alaskan landscape—interventions that have been absorbed so completely into the land they are difficult to date or attribute.
In Alaska, it’s easy to focus on the grandiosity of nature and the landscapes that we call home. I am interested in zooming in and documenting the subtle and ambiguous ways humans have impacted the landscape here. Interventions is a developing photography project about the subtle ways humans have marked and modified the Alaskan landscape across cultures and time.
Alaska’s landscape is layered with thousands of years of human presence, but most photography focuses on the grandiosity of the landscape. The history of alteration ties back to Indigenous peoples who have inhabited the land for thousands of years--topping trees, marking trail blazes, or leaving caches. Those marks remain alongside more recent ones, such as culverts rerouting wetlands, or trails cut into permafrost.
