In Light Years follows storylines of ecological transformation during California's recent cycles of megafires and floods. From 2021-2025, I traveled extensively across the state documenting communities and environments on the frontlines of extreme weather. Working primarily with a 4x5 view camera, my approach expanded over time towards the outskirts and along conceptual boundary lines. Here I could observe the intermixing of ecological change, community disruption, traces of the sublime, and everyday vernacular textures abstracted into the mythic realm. Unbound by linear narratives, my photographs wander out into the stars and follow the moon just as they stand in the ashes of burned books or in fields of pink grass covered in fire retardant. The presence of sublime beauty alongside landscapes in peril is a central tension holding this work together. At the heart of In Light Years is my urge to see our relationship to the climate crisis through wider points of view that are at once ecological and mythic.
