This project aims to conceptualize and visualize the thoughts and emotions of the individuals involved, yielding a tangible representation of their experiences.

This series aims to illuminate the lived experiences of failed migration in Somalia. While many undertake the harrowing journey to Europe in search of safety and economic opportunity, many more fail to reach new shores, falling victim to smuggling, financial constraints, violence, and dangerous seas.

Migration out of Somalia is predominantly the result of dire economic conditions. However, attempts to flee can inflict greater anguish on remaining family members and loved ones who are often forced to immediately liquidate their meager possessions, causing a substantial loss in the value of livestock, houses, and land.

This economic strain drowns families in debt, obliterating any prospects of escaping poverty and compelling more of the younger generation to flee. Additionally, those who are unable to complete the journey often face stigma upon returning to Somalia, leading to greater social discord. Having been a young person in Somalia myself, I empathize with the challenges and struggles that the youth in this community face.

This project aims to conceptualize and visualize the thoughts and emotions of the individuals involved, yielding a tangible representation of their experiences. I used multiple exposures in camera technique to convey the feeling of heaviness these returnees had while trying to reintegrate with their communities.

Mustafa, a 26-year-old born and raised in Hargeisa, experienced a sense of helplessness post-school, leading him to attempt migration at 16 in 2013. His first attempt was thwarted, and police returned him to his family. Facing a large number of youths attempting illegal emigration, often incited by smugglers, the authorities maintain a vigilant watch on solo or group travelers who are minors.

Amran, a 29-year-old, was born and raised in Berbera, a coastal city in the north. She once loved living there, back when the city was affordable and nurtured the less fortunate. However, since returning, she feels it has changed; she left it when it was still good. The departure was to provide for her children and ensure their future.
