Bad waking dreams

After russian invasion of Ukraine, things changed dramatically for every Ukrainian. On 24 February 2022, we woke up to a new distorted reality where familiar routine comes along with missile attacks and the horror of the war. Some Ukrainians were forced to leave their homes, but some remained to stay in the country, trying to continue living their lives and fighting the aggression.

This project is my reflection on the new reality we live in. Here you see how horrible images of tanks make their way through the pictures of simple city life. Whether having a coffee, visiting a market, or going down the street, we all constantly feel the pressure of war.

For the project, I used film photography, where at first I shot views of Kyiv street and then reused the film and made the shots of russian destroyed military equipment. This technique served me great for two reasons. Firstly, I had no control over the images' overlap, like I had no control over my messed up emotions and thoughts. Secondly, double exposure reflects the idea of double lives we leave: remains of familiar reality and the ugly wartime.
